Inside the Capital Building

Written by Sereina February 9, 2013

Yesterday, for the first time in my life, I went inside the capital building in Olympia. I've lived in Washington my whole life and it only took me nearly 19 years to visit it. :P

There are several really big and fancy chandeliers.

Hangin' out in the main area.

All the doors inside had George Washington door knobs. Pretty cool.

Some more chandeliers.

A Taste of Spring

Written By Tiana:

The last few days it's been sunny off and on all day. Today I decided to go out and get some pictures and enjoy the warm weather. After I was done taking pictures I played Star Wars with my brother.

Last week on the Pinterest challenge I didn't really do anything, my mind was preoccupied with decided on what costume I want to make for May the 4th (this year I remembered to make a costume a month and a half before, and not 3 days!). I finally decided on Beru Lars from episode II. I'll be posting my progress on my costume blog, here. When the costume is done I'll post it on this blog as well.

Back on the topic of the Pinterest challenge, I'm going to do my best to do something this week, but I'm going to be putting a lot of time into my costume.

Our Neighbor Cat

Written By Tiana:

We call him Gino which is short for Orangino. We don't know his real name because it's some Russian name.

The sun is out and shining right now and it's fairly warm out. I thought I'd go out and take some pictures of Gino, because he was on our back porch begging to come in for some food. Well, that didn't go to well because he just kept sticking his head through the railing to watch our chickens. So I only got one decent photo. Cat's are so hard to take pictures of!

Tiana's January Projects

Tiana has an online business called Redberry Supply where she sells crafting supplies.  Between her profits there and a mamma's helper job she has she paid for a camera of her own to learn photography with.  Below are a couple of samples of her beginning work.

Being that I have a few photographers in my home, I notice that they see life through the camera and therefore notice things and view things with the art of a picture in mind.  This is what Tiana saw when we woke up to go somewhere and the car was frosty.

Lately Tiana has taken to drinking tea, listening to music from the 40's - 50's while she is crocheting, knitting, drawing or whatever.  What a peaceful and creative life she lives.

As a part of her blogging and photography she has been led to learn PhotoShop.  This is a fun project she made for the header of her blog.

Tiana has become quite the Tangled fan which has led to lots and lots of drawing.  She has been getting books from the library and practicing her drawing for hours.  Here is some of her latest drawings of Rapunzel.

It is quite normal to see Tiana working on some sort of yard project at any given time.  This is a new pattern she learned online.  She is currently working on crocheting a hat and I noticed she has another knitting project started too just yesterday.  The wheels are always turning in her head.

A few years ago Tiana took up an interest in tap dance and began to teach herself some steps with the help of YouTube.  This summer she began taking tap classes and was able to skip the first several levels because of the work she has done at home.  She has invested in her interest by teaching herself and continues to invest by paying for half of the monthly fee for her tap classes.  She has wanted these shoes for a long time and was finally able to buy them thanks to her job and business.

Sereina's Projects

Something I originally wanted to share when I started this blog was my children's projects.  Initially I thought I would talk all about them or have them talk all about them.  They enjoy blogging about the projects on their  own personal blogs which seemed like a lot of duplicity and life has been busy so, as you can see, I haven't posted much in a long time.  This morning the Lord inspired me to post monthly about each child's activities, just highlighting various projects.  That feels so much freedom to me  to do that since it's still on my heart to feature my children's projects.

Sereina made this gift to give a friend for her birthday.
She made the salts and decorated the jars.

Sereina was inspired by another blogger to do her first painting.  She chose Paradise Falls from the movie, "Up."  She doesn't consider herself very artistic, but I really think she is.  She had to redo the background  since she felt it turned out too dark the first time, which was a blessing to see as I remember a time when not getting it right the first time would have been really hard for her to accept.  I am really glad for the teaching in Lifestyle of Learning about how to develop character along with their learning activities so they have a truly well rounded education.

The above and below pictures are some of her photography artwork which is her main passion and her new vocation, she started her photography business, Sereina Charise Photography,  in the beginning of January.  The above picture colloage is Koko, one of our Seal Point Siamese cats.  He's quite the character as you might note from the picture.

This picture collage is from our state capitol building.

Sereina and a friend got together to craft and they each made a couple of knotted bow headbands.  this is one of Sereinas.  They found the idea on Pinterest.  I think they look very cute.

These are some of Sereina's projects from the last month or so.

Alina's Varied Expression of Her Interest in Animals

Alina has always loved animals and I have seen animals really connect with her in various situations over the years.  One of the many animals she loves are horses, which led her to begin collecting Schleich model horses and eventually other types of animals as well.  She is building and making most everything that is needed for a farm/equestrian center for her models.  As I think about the various directions her interest in collecting Schleich animals have taken her, I am quite amazed.

Math and Woodworking

She started with designing a barn and then soliciting her daddy’s help in building it.  This barn has taken a long period of time to build, she still is putting on shingles before it will be finished.  Building this barn included math as she drew the plans and then measured and designed it to fit the size of her models, figuring and refiguring sizes.  She put a bit of thought in how to make the roof, which required perseverance in figuring out designs that work or don’t work so well.  She is now in the process of designing a bigger and better barn to build in the future.

This was Alina's first drawing of the stall area inside the barn with measurements.

A front view of her barn.  Up in the hay loft the kitties are playing, the stalls are filled with horses and there is lots of activity going on with the dog running around and the horse tied up and ready to go, or did it just get back from a ride?
A side view of the barn and part of the corral

Popsicle Sticks & Hot Glue

In addition to her horses she has collected cats, cattle, dogs, chickens and recently got her first person.  She has used popsicle sticks and hot glue to make many things for her animals which include fences, bridges, basic horse jumps, horse jumps with bars that fall off, horse water troughs, horse tack room, horse washroom, horse stalls, round pen with a gate that opens, frames for horse pictures to hang in the house she wants to build one day, a chicken coop, a cat tree, cat feeder, a dog house, dog bowls, a cave for her dogs, a wishing well, a working cow milking stall, a milking stool, and the list goes on.

This is the tack room.  Alina made all the horse blankets from fleece, except for the blue one.
Her very first halter are hanging, made out of bread ties.

Alina modeled her chicken coop after our actual coop.

The round pen, three dog houses, more pens and the bridge she made.

The corral is filled with horses.  This is the gate she made that opens and close.

Polymer Clay
With polymer clay she has made cat food, flowers, dog food and water bowls, dog food, carrots and apples for the horses, plates, a cake and cookies for her person, and eggs for the chicken coup.

Apples and carrots that Alina made for the horses.

Beading

Alina had learned some basics in beading, and she is using some of those techniques along with some of the beading supplies in making horse bridles, halters and adding straps to her home-made felt saddles that actually cinch up.
Here she used lobster hooks (beading term) and leather craft lace to tie the horse down for her bath.  The wishing well is made from rocks from our yard glued together.

Engineering/Problem Solving

Many of the items that Alina built for her Shleich models required a bit of figuring, or engineering.  She went through of process of figuring out what doesn’t work until she discovered what worked, sometimes drawing out what she wanted to do.  For her bridle’s she started with one version that didn’t really fit over the horses head the way she wanted and later figured a new way with new materials to put the bridles together so they looked more realistic.  She saw a cow feeding stall on a TV and then spent time working out in her mind and in real life how to make a piece of the stall move so that she could lock the cow’s head in.  She wanted a gate that really opens and closes for the stable and after her daddy gave her some plastic hinges she spent time working out in her mind and in real life to make the gate piece so that it would stand up and then open and close.

The cow stall Alina made with a removable bar so the cow's head can be locked in.

Photography – Story Writing - Video/Movie Making - Editing

Alina has shown an interest in photography in the past, but had put that aside.  She brought her camera out to record her collection of Schleich models.  This collection of pictures led to Alina using Windows Live Movie Maker to make a slide show and add music.  This then led to her making up a story where she used pictures and video together to tell a story.  So far she has made two episodes of Kovu and his herd.

Negotiating

I couldn’t help but add this one in that happened just recently.  Dan offered to pay one of the kids for doing a data entry task for him.  When Alina saw what was involved she negotiated new Schleich models in place of the money, which ended up costing Dan more than he offered the job up for.  She is quite the negotiator, as her dad doesn’t budge that easy in this area, but this is something he has modeled and she has learned well.

These are the 4 new Schleich that Alina got from negotiating with her daddy.

Tiana's Tree Photo's

Below are some pictures taken by Tiana.  She hasn't taken as big of an interest in photography as Sereina has, but does enjoy dabbling with it from time to time at this phase of her life.  I think she too has an eye for composition.  The bottom two pictures are my favorite of the four.

Tiana's Photography and Collections

Written by Tiana:

I want to show you all the stuff I found when my mom and I went out garage selling. Just so you know, there are a
lot of pictures!

I got the entire Anne of Green Gables series!

This Luggage set my mom bought for me. It's so cute!

I've been needing a book bag for so long, and now I have this one! I love how it has horses on it!

I got this vintage suitcase for only a couple a dollars. I love anything vintage.

Here's the inside. The top flips down for more storage.

I've been looking at shirts similar to this one at Fred Meyer but they were always so expensive, so I was so happy when I found this shirt for one dollar!

I love these shoes!

I love these ones as well!

I found this soft yarn and had to buy it! I think it will make a great scarf cowl.

This is all of my stuff together!
